In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
