Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to question specific rulings made by the official, echoing the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
